Who am I?
I am a busy elementary principal with a mission to support other principals lead reading in their schools.
I began my teaching career in Chicago Public Schools as an intern teaching summer school. After college graduation I moved to New Orleans and taught for several years as part of the Recovery School District. Both those experiences were formative in developing my passion for education reform.
My first principal job was as special education teaching principal for an unbridged island off the coast of Maine. I road a ferry to work daily and it was in this role through working with a literacy consultant my teaching practices transformed with my new knowledge of the science of reading.
My training includes a Master’s Degree is Teaching and Learning from the University of Southern Maine, a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Education Leadership from University of New England, a Certificate of Advanced Education Leadership from Harvard University and LETRS for administrators.
Now, I am a principal of a PK-5 Title 1 school in rural Maine. My first year our state testing scores increased from 51% on benchmark to 88% on benchmark in reading. I work with reading teachers and reading interventionists across our district. I also coax kindergarteners off the playground when recess ends (as pictured).
